In May 1924, two uniquely American institutions clashed in the streets of South Bend, Indiana: the University of Notre Dame and the Ku Klux Klan. Notre Dame represented the highest aspirations of American Catholics, while the Klan epitomized the fear that many had to the rising tide of Catholic immigration. Three days of violence would change both institutions forever.
