Interview - Diane Hall

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’d say I’m essentially light-worker who’s been experiencing a series of intense spiritual awakenings since the age of about seventeen, possibly longer. And writing was kind of birthed out of one of these sudden bursts of consciousness-raising. I’ve been writing novels for almost ten years now and I LOVE it! I’m also a trained actress and singer; I’ve studied drama for four years, including teacher-training, and I’ve written poetry and songs for as long as I can remember, so I feel much more a creative person than a spiritual teacher, even though most of my books, probably all of my books embrace spiritual themes and nuances. I would say I’m passionate about spirituality, but I also LOVE comedy and, in my experience, the process of inspiration always flows best when I stay nice and loose and try not to be too attached to anything. And that includes trying not to take anything too seriously!

Describe your book ‘Earth Angel’ in 30 words or less.

Wow! It’s an exploration of life, love, the after-life, death, bereavement, twin-flames, soul-contracts, walk-ins, and inter-dimensional travel, as experienced by an incarnating Angel with a weird sense of humour!

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Letting it go when it was finished! Completing it to my satisfaction and my stringently perfectionistic standards was a major challenge. The process itself was an absolute joy, but getting it to the point where I could say, “Okay, this is it; it’s done now”.... that was tough. It has, therefore undergone several changes...except for the channelled bits, which I tend to leave alone...They were always perfect, right from the start. My Guides are a lot quicker than I am. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

That’s very difficult to pin down because I’ve read so many!!! I’m a big Shakespeare fan; I love the language; I LOVE good, poetic, almost musical language and great plots. Lots of different bits and pieces I come across as a reader will fall in and out of favour with me, but that’s the one constant passion, throughout my reading and dramaturgical life so far, Shakespeare plays. I also enjoy the fun elements in books by Terry McMillan and Marion Keyes, who write great, earthy, intelligent, romantic fiction for women, with a sassy twist to them. Rachel’s Holiday, Waiting to Exhale... gorgeous reads! Also, The Celestine Prophesy was a revelation to me. It was the book that made me realise that “Oh, it’s okay to write very spiritual books which aren’t necessarily non-fiction. I don’t really enjoy writing books delivering a treatise, a design for living. I tried once but just kept changing my mind later, about what I believed. I’ve read a lot of those books by some great teachers mind you; I love all them, but as a creative person I get much more joy out of writing novels which celebrate the human condition in all its complexity, as well as asking lots of key questions. I find the questions much more interesting that the answers. Most of my novels are just a deeply philosophical romp through possibility, with the occasional evolutionary, post-modernist, spiritualist rant thrown in for good measure! My channelled books are a different matter however. The content in those have very little to do with me so I just let them flow out the way they want to. Oh and I love the poetry of Rumi and some of the lyrical, lilting phrasing of a Madame Bovary kind of book and the truthfulness and warmth of, The Catcher in the Rye, and the deep, deep love imbedded in a book of the calibre of The Colour Purple.... The kind of love that makes such incredible healing emerge out of describing such horrible pain... Also Maya Angelou Poems and... Dr Seus! I don’t think I like the books I’m supposed to like... I’m a spiritualist/populist hybrid with intellectual leanings. There’s so much more I could say but I think that’s enough for now. I’m currently reading, The Story of Edgar Cayce - There is a River (Again) By Thomas Sugrue and I Don’t Know How She Does it by Allison Pearson.

Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

At the moment, I’m just keeping my eyes open for new opportunities to talk about it, to really share the joy of it with people. I don’t know how good I am at doing a straight ahead sales thing. It’s a bit hit and miss sometimes, but I’ve got lots of new ideas I haven’t tried yet. I’ll keep you posted! It’s all fairly organic at the moment. I just trust the guidance I receive about things to try, and keep saying yes to anything that gives me an opportunity to talk about the books and the process. I just want to talk... I love talking about my work; the rest of it – all the sales nuts and bolts - is still a HUGE learning curve.

How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

Thinking about writing, talking about writing, reading about writing, reading, singing, dancing, connecting with other Lightworkers and...yes, planning future writings in my head or on notepads. I have a LOT of notepads and a very big day-to-a-page diary, which I pretend is for events and appointments but that’s really just another ideas book...for book ideas! J

What are you working on next?

At the moment there are about five different ideas rolling around in my head, vying for attention. I know my Guides want me to finish up a science fiction trilogy I’ve started already. Then there’s a series of children’s’ stories, a book of light-hearted poetry for Lightworkers, another comedy novel I can’t say too much about yet and maybe some songs...
