Love Sucks

Rate this book
In England during the seventeen hundreds, Cara Jones had her human life ended for her and she became a creature of the night. One moment she's an adolescent young woman living her life, the next she's lurking in the streets at night looking for her next meal. The vampire slayings in England became so brutal the whole race was nearly wiped out. So Cara and the clan she called her extended family fled to the U.S. to make a home. They kept to themselves and stayed out of trouble by feeding on recently deceased corpses and cleaning out blood supplies at local hospitals. When one of the clan members makes a mistake, they are once again being hunted and Cara is the only one who makes it out alive. Cara is officially the last vampire on earth. So when Cara awakes from a two hundred year slumber, she awakes to a new city, new people, and a new way of life. Cara sets out on a journey to find her soul mate, the one person who is designed for her. Along the way she encounters a zany new friend, a jealous co worker, and a man whom she can't live without. Dr. Jared Sayers is her destiny. Will Jared give up everything he knows to be with Cara? Or will she wander the earth for the rest of eternity alone?

My review from my blog:

I took a chance recently on Twitter and reached out to novelist Lauren Hammond. She had been tweeting about her new novel, Love Sucks, and I just had to get my hands on a copy. The novel, I came to find out, wasn't even in print yet. Hammond got the okay from her publisher {okay, it took a little bit of teeth pulling} to send me a copy via email, in PDF format. Within days, I was reading her novel and feel so honored to be trusted with it!

Love Sucks is described as the story of Cara Jones, a young woman living in 18th century England who is turned into a vampire. The novel follows Cara over many miles and hundreds of years, from England to the United States, as she struggles to accept her new life and searches for love.

I need to preface this by saying I have a pile of books to read which are awaiting my review. The moment I began reading the first paragraph of Love Sucks, I knew the others would simply have to wait. This novel deserved my undivided attention.

I can hear your echo in my ears already; another vampire story? No! This is not your typical blood sucking thriller. Love Sucks is delicate and intimate. The events are carefully narrated, by Cara herself, in that you become Cara. You feel her agony and heartbreak and loyalty. You watch as she sees the world for the very first time through her newborn vampire eyes.

Cara awakens without even knowing she has become a vampire. It takes another like her to bring her face to face with reality. She takes you on a journey from centuries of old into the present day where everyday life for us that is normal, is completely strange and unusual for her. I found myself surrendering to laughter more than once.

Cara has one opportunity to find her soul mate. It wouldn't be a vampire story without some twists and turns along the way and trust me when I say, Love Sucks does not disappoint. I found myself shouting out, "Oh no!" more than once. A sequel is in order!

Allow Love Sucks to pull you in the way it did me, from the very beginning!

I'm not ashamed to say I like vampire stories...And I think Love Sucks, a novella by Lauren Hammond is one of the most fun vampire reads that I've had in a long time!

What happens when you wake up in the 1700s, only to find out you're dead? Kind of... Um...Not so much...

Ms. Hammond does a great job of sucking you right into the story with her fast-paced narrative. When Cara wakes up, her entire family is dead...And she is, too. It appears that Cara didn't die of natural causes. Love Sucks is packed full of love and adventure seen through the wide eyes of Cara Jones, a newly made vampire. Told through Cara's point of view, we see her awakening and coming to terms with death as she knows it.

Cara struggles as she tries to accept the life of a vampire and everything that entails. Has she become a monster? Can she live with herself? And what makes any existence worth living?

Love Sucks is brimming with love and romance, but aside from the steamy hot vampire kisses, my favorite parts are the fresh takes on life as a vampire. Lauren Hammond shows us a unique kind of vampire community. These vampires are strong, but not indestructible. They drink blood and live in a world that sees them as monsters. They live both hidden, and on the run, all of them trying to figure out their place in society. In a world that doesn't doesn't believe in vampires, can the living and the dead learn to coexist? And did I mention steamy hot vampire kisses???

This book took me by surprise. I ordered this book after talking with Ms. Hammond. Her books immediately captured my interest and it did not disappoint.

Cara was turned into a vampire and left in her grave. After, she could not understand what was going on with her. She meets Andrew, who helps her adjust to her new way of life. Tragedy struck as villagers come to hunt them down. Cara escapes making her way to a new vampire clan. Soon they too are taken over and Care falls into a long peaceful sleep only awakening into a totally different world.

Ok, let me just say that I found this book interesting because of the contrast between the past, then flashing to the future. I was glad to read a back round on Cara. She is such a strong character. Willing herself to adjust to anything to survive. She wakes up into a world of the future. I had a good laugh reading about Cara adventure to the future. She was so confuse about things, I had to laugh.

Ms. Hammond did a great job writing the book, although I felt as I was reading like some things were left out. I found myself confuse at some points because not everything was fully explained. I did eventually get it, though it took me awhile. The romance in this book was well played. I enjoyed watching Jared and Care get to know each other and see their love grow.

In all, I enjoyed this book. It was a quick, easy, fun read.

Love Sucks is Lauren Hammond’s debut novel. It’s the tale of a young female vampire who finds herself in a whole new world and is setting out to find her one true mate.

I was quite excited to read this book as I love vampires and I love a good romance story. To begin with I really enjoyed the historical elements and I enjoyed learning Hammond’s transformation of her vampires. Hammond’s vampires are attacked and when they wake up they are thrust out into the world on their own with no guidance or training on how to not get caught by the humans.

Unfortunately about half way through the book was when the book started to dissatisfy me. I was finding that I wasn’t sure of the timeline anywhere in the book. I felt as if I was being dragged from one day to the next and then all of a sudden it’s a year later without any warning. Also, I personally wasn’t impressed by the character development in the second half of the book. It all felt a bit rushed and I felt as if the lot was too predictable.

Don’t get me wrong, Love Sucks was an enjoyable read but just not my cup of tea. I wouldn’t let my view of the book put anyone off reading it. I would recommend it to younger readers as I think it would be better suited to those of the teenage persuasion.

Disclaimer: I was sent this e-book via SookieStackhouse.com to review. I have not been paid to review this book and everything I have said is of my own honest opinion.

Awesome tale of Vampires without all the glitter! This novella really takes its protagonists back to the origin of their species. With the ferocity of Bram Stoker's Dracula, this book takes a look at the unbeating heart of the Vampire race and finds that they feel some of our same human emotions, just in a slightly different way. It pulls you through the anxiety and confusion that accompanies a transformation from life to eternal life. I really enjoyed the relatively simple, yet unique storyline to this book. Lauren took a simple classic that has been perverted by sparkling vampires and "too-sexy-for-his-shirt" werewolves and made it her own. I loved this book! And it's a simple afternoon read. I promise you won't regret picking this one up!
