Southern Illinois; flat, boring, and corny. A place full of small towns stumbling onward through failed dreams. A young journalist resides in one of these towns, a place where opportunity is scarce but they have murder in abundance. Axe murder that is, and a lot of it. Despite facing limited soft-resistance from the local police at every turn, the journalist persists, putting one foot in front of the other until he tumbles into a deep secret. Now, having utilized nothing more than his limited investigative skills and the services of an illegal immigrant, he is forced to flee the scene of these newly uncovered truths. After a dangerous night out he takes refuge in a trashy bar, starts chatting up a prostitute and, from there, things only get worse. This is where the story really begins in Bakers Dozen.
