This daily journal is a commentary on all the major events in Britain, Ireland, and beyond during the first six tumultuous months of 2011. The author likes to think outside of the box and isn't afraid to swim against the tide of 'conventional wisdom'. As a consequence, the reader is treated to a refreshingly candid, non-conformist view of the unfolding domestic and world events. Included in this literary outpouring of angst and amusement are such items as:
the execution without trial of Bin Laden
the new wind of change blowing through the Arab states
the royal weeding between AbdiKate Middleton and big Willie Windsor
Lizzie Windsor's visit to the Republic of Ireland
the collapse of Fianna Fail in Ireland and the Oirish elections
the AV vote and the unravelling of the harmonious British coalition government
the futility of further terrorist activity in Ulster
the unsavoury Old Firm sectarian rivalry in Scotland
the greed, hypocrisy, immorality, and selfishness of top financiers and politicians
Few people are excused as the writer's concern about inequality and injustice leads him to let rip at various high-profile figures and celebrities. The media have cold-shouldered him so far, but the commentator and satirist Gary Watton is intent on inflicting his denouncements, theories, and even solutions on a complacent, indifferent public. This provocative food for thought is writing as it should be. For all his moralising and rants, Mr Watton talks a surprising amount of sense.
